Victoria, Australia is bracing for a significant overhaul of its gambling policies. The Andrews Labor Government is pioneering reforms that aim to promote responsible gambling across the state, with a tentative implementation date set for 2024.

In addition, the state is planning to reduce the maximum amount a player can load into a poker machine at a time. The ‘load limit’ will decrease from AU$1,000 (US$681) to just $100, significantly restricting the potential for large losses in a single game session.
Premier Daniel Andrews, in commenting on the initiative, stated, “These reforms will provide the strongest gambling harm prevention and anti-money laundering measures in Australia.”
A Pace Change and Anti-Money Laundering Measures
The Andrews Labor Government is not stopping at load limits. The pace of gaming is also under scrutiny, with a proposed increase in the spin rate on poker machines from the current 2.1 seconds per game to three seconds. This strategy aims to slow down gaming, potentially further curtailing losses.
Gaming operations will also face mandatory closure periods. From mid-next year, all gaming machine areas, excluding Crown Casino, will have to shut down operations for at least six hours a day, specifically between 4am and 10am.
Moreover, to prevent money laundering, the money funneled into the machines will be tracked under the new reforms, adding an extra layer of security to the gaming scene.
